Standard Audition Repertoire

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

CYS ORCHESTRAS (SR/Senior, AO/Associate Orchestra)

  • A prepared piece or study.

  • A 3-octave triplet spiccato scale (strings) and full chromatic scales tongued and slurred (winds) .

  • There will be no sight-reading or required pieces.

  • Prospective members should have at least 3 years of private instruction.

  • Prospective members should have at least 1 year of experience in a school band or orchestra ensemble.

STRING ENSEMBLES (IS/Intermediate, JS/Junior)

  • 2 octaves of G major and D major scales.

  • A prepared piece or study.

  • Prospective members should have at least 2 years of private instruction.

  • Prospective members should be skilled in at least the 3rd position, (4th for cellists)

WIND ENSEMBLE II (WE2, Advanced)

  • A 2-3 minute prepared excerpt from a concerto, sonata, etude or similar piece.

  • 2 octave scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats.

  • Prospective members should have at least 2 years of private instruction and 1 year of intermediate school band or orchestra ensemble experience.

WIND ENSEMBLE I (WE1, Intermediate)

  • Any prepared solo or etude of intermediate level.

  • Prospective members should have at least 2 years of private instruction and 1 year of intermediate school band or orchestra ensemble experience.

INTRODUCTORY WIND ENSEMBLE (IWE)

  • Any prepared solo or etude of intermediate level.

  • Prospective members should have at least 1 year of private instruction and 1 year of intermediate school or orchestra ensemble experience.

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES (For all orchestras & ensembles)

  • A prepared piece or study of your choice appropriate to your performing level on snare, mallets (marimba or xylophone) and timpani.

  • Simple sight reading.

  • Experience with all instruments not required.
