Matthew Kim

Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner


Matthew Kim, 15, is in 10th grade at Sacred Heart Preparatory, Atherton.  He started clarinet at the age of nine.  Matthew has been playing with the California Youth Symphony since 2015, currently as first clarinet in the Associate Orchestra. Matthew also participates in various solo and ensemble competitions. As a soloist, he was awarded Grand Place in the 2018 Silicon Valley Youth Music Competition, First Prize in the New York Classical Music Award 2018 International Competition, Second Place in the 2017 Silicon Valley Youth Music Competition, and 2nd Prize in the 2017 Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition, Vienna.  As part of an ensemble, Matthew was awarded Second Place in the 2018 US Open Music Competition, Third Place in the 2017 US Open Music Competition, First Place in the 2017 American Protege International Competition, and Second Place in the 2017 US International Music Competition.  In 2016 Matthew performed with the California All State Honor Concert Band as first clarinet and performed in 2017. 

Outside of music, Matthew is an avid lacrosse player, playing attack for ADVNC San Francisco and Sacred Heart Preparatory.  Matthew studies clarinet with Debra Gardner.
