October 1972 Concert

The CYS 21st Season – First Concert, conducted by Aaron Sten, was performed on Sunday, October 29, 1972, at 7:00 P.M. at the San Mateo High School Auditorium, with a repeat concert on Sunday, November 5, 1972, at 2:30 P.M. at the Flint Auditorium.

The first half of the program featured:

  1. "The Star Spangled Banner" (Specially arranged for CYS by Mr. Don Burton)

  2. Antonín Leopold Dvořák (1841–1904) Symphony No. 8 in G Major, op. 88 

    I. Allegro con brio II. Adagio III. Allegretto grazioso IV. Allegro ma non troppo

The second half of the program included:

  1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 4 in D Major, K. 218 (First movement only) Soloist: Judy Mass

  2. Stanley Silverman (b. 1938) Tenso (A short symphonic tone poem for percussion and orchestra) Conducted by Richard Peterson

  3. Aram Ilyich Khachaturian (1903–1978) Masquerade Suite, op. 48b I. Waltz II. Nocturne III. Mazurka IV. Romance V. Galop


March 1973 Concert

Concert Program Overview

The CYS 21st Season – Second Concert, conducted by Aaron Sten, was held on Sunday, March 4, 1973, at 7:00 P.M. at the San Mateo High School Auditorium, with a repeat performance on Sunday, March 11, 1973, at 2:30 P.M. at the Flint Auditorium.

The concert program for the first half included:

The second half of the program featured:

  1. Alessandro Marcello (1673–1747) Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D Minor Soloist: Neil Panton I. Allegro moderato II. Adagio III. Allegro
  2. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) Concerto for Flute and Orchestra No. 1 in G Major, K. 313 (First movement only) Soloist: Melinda Norton
  3. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy

Featured Soloists

Melinda Norton, Flute Soloist

Melinda Norton is a 17-year-old senior at Ravenswood High School. She plays both the flute and the piccolo and is a pupil of Loyd Gowen of San Francisco. Melinda has been a member of the California Youth Symphony for four years and is also a member of the Peninsula Symphony Woodwind Quintet.

Neil Panton, Oboe Soloist

Neil Panton, 16, is a pupil of Jean-Louis LeRoux of San Francisco. He plays both the oboe and English horn and previously studied for five years with Robert Hubbard. Neil is the principal oboist for the CYS and has been a member of the orchestra for three years. He is also a member of the Peninsula Symphony Woodwind Quintet.
