November 1973 Concert

The CYS 22nd Season – First Concert, conducted by Aaron Sten, was performed on Sunday, November 11, 1973, at 7:00 P.M. at the San Mateo High School Auditorium, with a repeat concert on Sunday, November 18, 1973, at 2:30 P.M. at the Flint Auditorium. 

The program opened with "The Star Spangled Banner," specially arranged for CYS by Mr. Don Burton. This was followed by Antonín Leopold Dvořák (1841–1904)'s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, op. 95 (“From the New World”), performed in its entirety, encompassing the four movements: Adagio – Allegro molto, Largo, Scherzo (Molto vivace), and Allegro con fuoco. Following the intermission, the second half began with Robert H. Pearson (b. 1925)'s Repercussion: Concert Piece for Percussion Solo Ensemble and Wind Orchestra, conducted by Richard Peterson. The concert then featured the first movement (Allegro con Brio) of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827)'s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in C Major, op. 15, showcasing Robert Gonnella as the Piano Soloist. The program concluded with Mikhail Mikhaylovich Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859–1935)'s Caucasian Sketches, op. 10, which included the well-known sections "In the Mountain Pass," "In the Village," and "Procession of the Sardar".


February 1974 Concert

The CYS 22nd Season – Second Concert, conducted by Aaron Sten, was presented on Sunday, February 24, 1974, at 7:00 P.M. at the San Mateo High School Auditorium, with a repeat performance on Sunday, March 3, 1974, at 2:30 P.M. at the Flint Auditorium. 

The program opened with "The Star-Spangled Banner," specially arranged for CYS. by Mr. Don Burton. This was followed by Gioachino Antonio Rossini (1792–1868)'s Overture to "La Gazza Ladra" (“The Thieving Magpie”), which led into Carl August Nielsen (1865–1931)'s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, FS 119, where the first movement (Allegro Moderato) was performed, featuring Ann Kelley as the Flute Soloist. The first half concluded with Robert Jager (b. 1939)'s Sinfonia Nobilissima for Wind Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Richard Peterson. Following the intermission, the orchestra performed Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908)'s monumental Scheherazade, Symphonic Suite, op. 35, played in its four continuous movements: Largo Maestoso – Allegro non troppo, Lento, Andantino quasi Allegretto, and Allegro molto.


May 1974 Concert

The CYS 22nd Season – Third Concert, conducted by Aaron Sten, was performed on Sunday, April 28, 1974, at 7:00 P.M. at the San Mateo High School Auditorium, with a repeat concert on Sunday, May 5, 1974, at 2:30 P.M. at the Flint Auditorium. 

The program opened with "The Star-Spangled Banner," which was specially arranged for CYS by Mr. Don Burton. This was followed by the first two movements—Allegro Moderato and Andante Con Moto—of Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828)'s beloved Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D 759 (“Unfinished”). The first half of the concert concluded with Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov (1865–1936)'s "Autumn" from his ballet The Seasons, op. 67. After the intermission, the second half began with Mac Arthur Park, composed by Jimmy Layne Webb (b. 1946) and arranged by Holcombe and Peterson. Next, the orchestra performed the final movement (Allegro Scherzando) of Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873–1943)'s magnificent Concerto No. 2 in C Minor for Piano, op. 18, featuring Misara Chan as the Piano Soloist. The final work of the evening was Gioachino Antonio Rossini (1792–1868)'s dramatic Overture to William Tell.
