November 1958 Concert

Concert Overview

The program was diverse, spanning works from the Romantic to the modern era, and primarily included:

  • Symphony NO. 7 in C major by Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828), noted for its grand structure and rich melodies.
  • CONCERTO FOR CELLO AND ORCHESTRA by Édouard Lalo (1823-1892), featuring the Lento—Allegro Maestoso movement, performed by soloist Milton Saier, Jr.
  • The WAR MARCH OF THE PRIESTS from "ATHALIA" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847).
  • AMERICAN SALUTE by Morton Gould (1913-), an orchestral work combining American folk tunes with marches.

 

Featured Soloist: Milton Saier, Jr.

The concert prominently featured the young cellist Milton Saier, Jr., as the soloist for the Lalo Cello Concerto.

  • Background: Milton Saier, born on July 30, 1941, was a senior at Palo Alto High School and a member of the California Youth Symphony.
  • Musical Training: He studied cello with Charles Frisbie of Los Altos and Margaret Avery Rowell of Berkeley. During the summers of 1957 and 1958, he attended the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, where he studied with the eminent cellist and teacher, Gabor Rejto.
  • Other Interests: Outside of music, Milton's academic interests were in science, and he was planning to major in chemistry.

 

March 1959 Concert

The program was a blend of orchestral and ballet works, ranging from operatic overtures and classical concertos to romantic ballet suites.
