November 1971 Concert

The CYS 20th Season First Concert, conducted by Aaron Sten, was performed twice in November 1971. The first performance was held on Sunday, November 7, 1971, at 7:00 p.m. at San Mateo High School, and the second took place on Sunday, November 14, 1971, at 2:30 p.m. at De Anza College. 

The program for the first half was as follows:

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839–1881) A Night on Bald Mountain (Concert Fantasy)

Max Bruch (1838–1920) Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G Minor, op. 26 Soloist: Don Schlaffer

  • Allegro moderato
  • Adagio
  • Finale

The second half of the program featured:

Carl August Nielsen (1865–1931) Symphony No. 4, op. 29 (“The Inextinguishable”)

  • I. Allegro
  • II. Poco allegretto
  • III. Poco adagio quasi andante
  • IV. Allegro; tempo giusto

March 1972 Program

The CYS March 1972 concert was the 20th Season – Second Concert, presented as an ALL RUSSIAN PROGRAM, and conducted by Aaron Sten. Two performances were held: the first on Sunday, March 12, 1972, at 7:00 p.m. at San Mateo High School, and the second on Sunday, March 19, 1972, at 2:30 p.m. at De Anza College. 

The concert program was as follows:

  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) Andante Cantabile (from String Quartet No. 1 in D Major, op. 11)

  • Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky (1904–1987) "Colas Breugnon" Suite, op. 24 I. Overture II. "Fête populaire (People's festival)" III. "Fléau publique (People's calamity)" IV. "Insurrection (People's revolt)"

  • Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (1906–1975) Piano Concerto No. 2, op. 101 Soloist: Aglaia Koras I. Allegro II. Andante III. Allegro

  • Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) "Russian Easter" Overture, op. 36
