Season Opener Concerts

It is with deepest regret that we must announce the cancellation of our Season Opener Concert this Sunday, November 18, 2018 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center. The Superintendent of the San Mateo Union High School District has announced that all classes and permits for other events have been canceled for Friday through the weekend due to unhealthy air quality. This of course means our CYS performance this Sunday has been canceled.

For anyone who has purchased an admission ticket online for this weekend’s concert, we will issue full refunds. You will receive an email within the next two days to confirm your refund has been issued. At that point, it will take at least 5-7 banking days for funds to be available for use. For questions, please contact us:

We want to express our support for, and solidarity with, those persons directly impacted by the horrendous wildfires affecting our beautiful state. We share your grief with deepest sympathy and condolences. We also salute our California and out-of-state firefighters for the vital role they play in protecting our lives and for their brave and selfless sacrifice. They are nothing short of heroes. Please consider a donation to the American Red Cross or another organization providing assistance at this difficult time.

Again, we sincerely apologize for not being able to present a performance this weekend. However, we hope to see you at our Holiday Concert on Sunday, December 9, back at San Mateo Performing Arts Center. It is a FREE event celebrating the holiday season with music by our top three performing ensembles: CYS Wind Symphony, CYS Associate Orchestra, and CYS Senior Orchestra. The concert starts at 2:30pm and no ticket is necessary.

Please be mindful of your personal health and well-being in the next few days.

California Youth Symphony

Join Maestro Eylar as he inaugurates the 67th season of the California Youth Symphony with a dazzling array of works on the season’s opening concert series. As the celebrations for the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein come to their close, Maestro Eylar has chosen to begin the season with music from Bernstein’s only original film score: On the Waterfront, the 1954 Marlon Brando blockbuster which garnered 8 Academy Awards. The work is one of Bernstein’s most deeply felt and moving compositions, from the action-packed fight scenes to the supremely beautiful and tender love music.  Our Young Artist Competition winner Abigail Leong will perform Dvořák’s beloved Cello Concerto, composed in New York in 1894-95 during Dvořák’s tenure as Director of the National Conservatory of Music. We round out our opening concert series with the thrilling, whirlwind opener La Valse, by Maurice Ravel. Don’t miss this intensely romantic and high-octane inaugural concert series!

Leo Eylar, conductor
Abigail Leong, cello

Ravel: La Valse
Dvořák: Cello Concerto (Abigail Leong, soloist)
Bernstein: Suite from On the Waterfront

Young Artist Competition Winner

Abigail Leong is fourteen years old and attends The King’s Academy in Sunnyvale. She started learning cello at the age of four, and her current teacher is Jonathan Koh of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Division, where she is furthering her music studies.

CYS Young Artist Competition

Each spring the California Youth Symphony holds its Young Artist Competition to select soloists for the following season. The Competition is open to pianists and instrumental soloists under age 19. Two young artists will be chosen by a panel of three judges to perform with the CYS Orchestra during the November or March concert series of the following season.

Application form becomes available in January!
