Elvin Hsieh

Senior Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner


Elvin Hsieh started learning the violin with Xiaoli Chen at age five, and has been a member of CYS for five years. His past teachers include Li Lin and Ian Swensen, and he currently studies with Chen Zhao.

His musical honors and awards include: first place in the American Protege International Concerto Competition (2016), first place in the United States Open Music Competition (2016), and two-time winner in the Junior Bach Festival (2014, 2015). He also served as the assistant concertmaster of the Stanford Symphony Orchestra in the summer of 2015, and was a part of the California All-State Symphony Orchestra (2016). Elvin was a first violinist at the Dominican University Chamber Music Camp (2016). He has also performed in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Hall and Weill Hall. In addition to classical music, he enjoys exploring the bluegrass genre, as he has also won the SCVFA Fiddle Tune Contest six times.

At Mountain View High School, he is vice president of Key Club, public relations officer of Interact Club, and community service manager of the Mandarin Club. Elvin is the concertmaster of the school symphony orchestra and chamber ensemble, and has soloed Vivaldi’s Winter with the latter.

In his free time, Elvin enjoys hanging out with friends, playing basketball, and learning new languages.
