Krishan Kumar

Senior Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner

Krishan Kumar is the principal flutist of the California Youth Symphony and the Harker School Orchestra. He first picked up the flute at the age of seven and began his musical studies with John Huang, former principal flutist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Krishan played in his elementary and junior high school bands since he was in third grade, but he first gained exposure to orchestral music as a freshman at the Harker School. His love for this music further augmented when he began studying under Maria Tamburrino, principal flutist of Symphony Silicon Valley, who has been his teacher for his entire high school career. He is grateful for all the profound musical insight and inspiration she and her husband, conductor George Cleve, have provided him with over these past four years. Since freshman year, Krishan has performed a concert tour spanning New Zealand with CYS and at the London New Year’s Day Festival and Chicago International Musical Festival with Harker. He spent the past summer learning and performing music for three concerts with the inaugural Stanford Youth Orchestra in the university’s new Bing Concert Hall with guidance from Stanford faculty and San Francisco Symphony musicians. Krishan will be attending Stanford University in the Fall.
