Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition Winner
Joy Xu is a 13-year old girl living in Palo Alto, and a freshman at Palo Alto High School. Joy has been passionately pursuing music from a very young age. She began playing the violin at age five, and the piano at age six. She later pick Violin as her primary instrument after several years of training. Joy is currently studying vioin with Mr. Zunxian Zhou.
Guest Wind Symphony Conductor
Dr. Matthew Sadowski was appointed as Director of Bands at the University of California, Berkeley in June 2018, where he now conducts the University Wind Ensemble and directs the Cal Marching Band. As an avid instrumental music conductor, chamber ensemble enthusiast, and interdisciplinary collaborator, Sadowski (or simply “Matt”) earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. He also holds music degrees from Ithaca College (Ithaca, New York – MM Wind Conducting) and Michigan State University (East Lansing, Michigan – BM Music Education). His foremost conducting teachers include Cynthia Johnston Turner of the University of Georgia, and Stephen Peterson of the University of Illinois.
Associate Orchestra Concerto Competition
California Youth Symphony's annual CONCERTO COMPETITION for the Associate Orchestra offers its current students a special challenge and an opportunity for public recognition. All students in the Associate Orchestra are encouraged to compete. One of two winners will debut in this Festival Afternoon concert.
