ENTRANCE AUDITIONS

All students must complete a successful entrance audition to be a member in any of the California Youth Symphony programs. Current members who wish to remain in their present program do not have to re-audition for the following year, with the exception of students on Probationary Status. Annual entrance auditions for those wishing to be considered for promotion are held each March or April. Auditions for 2nd violin members of the Symphony (Senior) Orchestra for promotion to the 1st violin section are also held in March or April. Current CYS students do not need to pay an audition fee if auditioning. Please review the Audition FAQ and Audition Requirements for more information.

SEATING AUDITIONS
Seating auditions are conducted in all core programs to assess the level of the ensemble and as a means to encourage and track improvement. There may be a degree of rotation which varies by section. Seating auditions are held in September. Music for seating auditions is chosen from the season repertoire and is distributed to the students approximately one month in advance. Please refer to the season calendar for specific dates, times and locations. Audition date and time assignments are mandatory and can only be rescheduled with prior CYS staff approval. All CYS students are required to take a seating audition unless specifically exempted by the Conductor. Students who do not take their seating audition may not be allowed to participate in rehearsals until one has taken place. Seating placements are in effect for the entirety of the season. Please note however that seating is subject to change.
