On July 8 the California Youth Symphony completed its 19th international tour, a 13 day, 5 concert journey through the North and South Islands of New Zealand. On the North Island there were wonderful performances in Auckland (the country’s largest city), Rotarua (the center of Maori culture) and Wellington (the capital). The Wellington concert was a Fourth of July celebration attended by the American ambassador. But perhaps the biggest thrill was collaborating with the Christchurch Youth Orchestra for a pair of memorable concerts on the South Island - one in Christchurch and one in the famous Opera House in Oamaru. Before the tour began San Francisco Classical Voice - the Bay Area’s premier online site for classical music - asked CYS cellists, brother and sister Eric and Emily Jang, to post reflections on their site as the tour progressed.
